Stoplights. Waiting. More stoplights. Got honked at. More stoplights. Fumes. And some heat. Sheesh. Route #021 was rough today.
East of Western on 63rd St. traffic was backed up maybe 40 cars. The stoplights were flashing red and only one car could go at a time. I was waiting in traffic with the rest of everyone. My usual habit is to stay as far to the right as possible. As we inch forward I move in my appropriate place in line. An unusual honk from directly behind me goes off because I'm obviously taking up too much space. Sense the irony? I look, don't the person behind me or anyone around me. So what is the thing to do? Smell fumes and maybe get honked at again? Nah. I waved at the guy that honked and rolled past two cars in front of me and jumped onto the sidewalk. I pass by 30 cars. Follow on car across the flashing red stoplights. And then I get to wait some more at the light to cross Broadway Extension.
All in all, stoplights added 40 minutes to my route today. I am not kidding. This serious took way too long.
The funny thing was that the cars were not the most dangerous thing today. As I was rounding the golf course a cute young woman driving a golf cart for the first time drove right across traffic and nearly the trail path as well without even giving a notice to anyone. I skid to a stop before I hit her. She stopped, got red faced and I went about my day.
And something about speed today. It may be that I am in just a bad mood. Or I just need a good MTB trail. But speed was not with me today. My speed just never got up, like a belch that just never surfaces.
Oh well, looking forward to this weekend. Roman Nose State Park.
Cheers,
