End of Project

This blog has been fun.  I've gotten out and enjoyed OKC.  But I can see where I may hit a wall soon. I will catalog all the possible routes for NW OKC eventually.  I can only pedal so far in a lunch break.  I probably won't ride my bike from home to work because the wife doesn't want me to die.  And there is no need to post my triathlon excursions because that really isn't the point of the blog, just some of the other bicycle related things on the brain.  So I will most likely end this project by the end of summer.  My one reader (that's me) will have to carry on somewhere else.  Plus, I'll probably pick up a new hobby by the end of summer.  I've always wanted to kite surf....

Yehuda Moon

Very true.... "If you're thinking too much you're not riding fast enough."

The big reason I get out is to clear my head. Sorry for the use of the old adage. But that is the true reason. Other than that it is exercise.

Yehuda Moon

I've never seen a "walk your bike" sign, but I'm sure it would tick me off if it was apparent that you didn't need to walk your bike.

Band makes tour on bicycles alone!

Urban Simplicity had the original post on this one. Ginger Ninjas made a 5,000 mile tour from Northern California through Mexico on bicycles alone. No van to tow equipment. They hauled everything on bike. No electricity necessary to power amplifiers either. They had generators hooked up to the bikes to power the amps for the show. Amazing. You can read more about bicycle music tours on Pleasant Revolution.

Napoleon leans with it

I kind of always thought of Napoleon as an ocean kind of guy. So I guess the beach cruiser does him well.

Map My Ride - motherload of routes

I found a website with a mother load of routes taken, MapMyRide. There are 404 routes for OKC. Which is kind of ironic/funny in a broken link/bad OKC roads kind of way.

What (alchoholic) drink matches what type of rider?

This is a topic I can actually find little content. So I guess I get to make it all up myself! There is a fancy with booze/liquor/alcohol throughout the world. If Europeans and Americans can agree on anything it is that we love our hooch. But what drink do you drink or what bike do you ride say about you? Here are my preliminary results.

Road racers are all about the champagne. This is largely due to the Tour de France. It is not hard to find a picture of a Tour winner and a glass of bubbly. I think it is actually required by French Law.

MTBers seem to fancy the dark stuff, beer that is. We are not about cutting wieght or power-to-weight ratios. A couple extra calories help get you around the course a little better.

Those that ride the hybrid bicycles or utility cycles seem to fancy vino. If you do not know what I am talking about then Google Yuba Mundo. What else matches that except a case or box of wine strapped to the rear rack?

I guess the genre that I do not have any REAL input on is the triathlete. I'm guessing a hybrid mixture of vino and champagne? More research, (burp), is necessary.

Project Touring Bike?

If you ride long enough, you will come up with a project bike.  Some people think of all the things they would add to their mountain bike.  Others go-go-gadget on their road bike and become Mr. Dashboard.  Some people go back and build the replica of their first bike (a co-worker of mine rebuilt a Chopper).  Some people go and make a custom mountain bike with no seat so that they can jump from object to object like a circus rider.  I've got dreams of a touring bike.

No that is not the touring bike of my dreams.  That is the same model Chopper my co-worker rebuilt.  Here is my Cannondale that I'm thinking of adding the touring components.

Nice start I think.  It has a heavy frame and the wider tires, 700/35c.  There is a seatpost shock and a shock on the head of the front fork, nothing major just will quiet some bumps.  The previous owner (dad) put the super-cushy seat on it already, clipless/regular combo pedal and added a odometer.  Now before I go gear happy I need to think about what and where I would actually ride this thing to.  There are two possibilities in my head, subject to change between cups of coffee of course, overnight to Red Rock Canyon and FreeWheel

I want to find out if I should take Route 66 or Highway 152 to Hinton if I choose to go out to RedRock.  I know along Highway 152 people are flying @ 70 MPH.  So I am a little bit against that.  I think that Route 66 is 55 MPH and goes through more towns so the MPH average of other vehicles will be a bit more in my favor.

FreeWheel would be a cool event for 2011.  I can't squeeze it in this year.  The wife has already planned all my vacation time for the year.  Plus I need time to figure out all the touring stuff.

Hmm.... maybe an overnight trip to Lake Thunderbird and back.

What would I add to the bike?  Panniers, frame bag, lights, the usual.  (Courtesy Nashbar)

Any feeback from anyone is much appreciated.

Yehuda Moon - SPRING IS HERE!!!

I bet that is how my mountain bike felt last fall.  It just gets so wet around here that I do not want to go out and trash the trails.  I rode it twice in the last week or so and it felt great. I am looking at ordering new tires for the mountain bike.  I'm reading up on all the differences.  I'll post what I ordered and why shortly.  The big debate right now is buy from a local shop or buy online and still have money for a jersey that I want.

Yehuda Moon - go play video games instead of bike?

I fear that with all the safety regulations and paranoia in the world that there will not be much for kids to do in 50 years from now. Ever see that movie Demolition Man with Sylvester Stallone? Bad movie. Great if you just want to see explosions and make fun of people in the future. But everything that was bad for you was outlawed. No salt was allowed in the food. Cursing was outlawed and you were fined for doing it. I'm betting no one was allowed to ride bikes or even swim in water either.

My birthday is Wednesday. Big 28! Not so important to me. I turned 10,000 days old last September, that was cool. My family already had my birthday dinner Sunday. It was funny because my mom gave me a card that said something along the lines that I was always my own stuntman as a kid and then a bunch of mushy stuff. After reading the card and saying thank you I rolled up my sleeve and showed her the latest group of scabs on my arm from last weeks crash at Bluff Creek. I hope I never grow up.

Yehuda Moon - dinosaurs

My daughter Kate loves dinosaurs.  I can see her doing this later.  She is only two so she just point out things that are pink and other objects of affection.

OMG I want to do this ride!  Can't happen in 2010.... I will immediately start working on my brownie points for 2011.

Bike Jersey - Ben Frankling quote

This needs to be on a bicycle jersey somewhere.

">Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin

I can see it on a 29'er club shirt somewhere.

Want: Another bike jersey

Want: Bike Jersey

Want: Bike Jersey

Bike jersey I want!

Office Trophy

We have a trophy that is a proud symbol of the person who has crashed last.  I have had the trophy for the last x^n number of months.  I did my best yesterday at BC to retain it for the next infinity and a half, as my son says.  So, I think the trophy may come apart and become a candy dish now.  I'm keeping the sign though either on my book shelf or desk somewhere.

Bluff Creek

I think Friday was my first trip to Bluff Creek this year, on a bike.  I've ran the trail more times than biked it.  Sad, sad, sad.  But I've only ran the trail twice. :)   I'm looking back at what I've done so far and I've moved way towards road biking.  I think it goes in waves though.  When we have a dry spell and BC is dusty I'm sure I'll be out there 3 times a week.  It just seems to be just wet enough during the week that BC would be muddy this year.  I can jump on the road bike for a good ride the very next day after a good rain or freak snow.  How many of those incidental blizzards?  Three?

There is some good news for this summer.  I found that there are trails near Sulphur, which is a place my family camps.  Also, the wife's family is going to Colorado Springs again.  We may make that trek up there the last week of June.  I'm totally taking the road bike and mountain bike.  We originally planned on going to Table Rock Lake, MO in May.  But we may save our cash for Colorado.  Good times.

I can't swim.... very long that is.

When I swim it usually involves thousands of dollars of gear.  I scuba dive.  Not often enough.  :)  I can scuba dive all day, or as long as I can without getting the bends.  I've been told I'm an efficient swimmer and I can move around easily.  Well, that just means I know how to move with tons of gear on.  Put me in a pool in just some trunks and tell me to go and I feel a little bit out of my element.  If I plan I on doing a triathlon in 2 months I better get some more pool time.  I did laps for 15 minutes in the gym pool and was whooped.  But I was also hauling butt, by my standards.

I think just one trip to the pool has told me plenty about my swimming style though.  I need to work on technique.  I need to work on being efficient with my movements and breathing properly.

I hope everyone is outside!

Route #026

I can't always go longer, harder and faster (contrary to what my wife says).  So this route is only around 12.5 miles.  Nothing special.  Just getting out.
